The training will provide an overview of relationship violence, including statistics of the prevalence of relationship violence in the U.S. as well as risk and protective factors related to relationship violence. We will also review therapeutic approaches that are supportive to individuals and families healing from relationship violence. This training will also review relationship violence in the context of the dynamics of power within interpersonal relationships as well as power in relation to a greater context in society, such as the oppressive forces that individuals that hold marginalized identities are harmed by which exacerbates risk to relationship violence.

As we work in a field of providing supportive services to system-involved youth and families who have and continue to experience individual, community, and historical trauma, we eventually become compassion fatigued and experience traumatization from hearing the stories of others, witnessing the harm of our participants, and from feeling the weight of the sociopolitical factors that contribute to harm that reaches the communities that we are trying to heal. This traumatization is often referred to as secondary trauma and it may lead us to experience doubts about continuing in the work, we may engage in unhealthy coping skills, and we may feel that we must cope with our secondary trauma on our own. This training will offer a comprehensive overview of trauma informed care and its core principles. Participants will explore the practical application of this framework as well as how to integrate cultural responsiveness to this approach, specifically for the Latine community. The Latine community often experiences unique traumatic stressors, such as immigration trauma, systemic discrimination, sociopolitical instability in their country of origin, etc., therefore, making the importance of being a trauma informed provider essential. Through this framework, providers will learn to approach Latine clients in a manner that is culturally responsive, reduces revictimization of trauma, and promotes long-term healing.

In this training, participants will learn about principles of engagement that can be applied when providing services to families who have experienced generations of trauma, including individual, intergenerational, and historical trauma. Typical challenges found in the engagement process in supporting this population will also be identified, such as cultural implications, bias, and social justice issues. Lastly, we will discuss practices and effective strategies for the engagement process and in building a positive alliance with families from a trauma informed and multicultural perspective.

In this training, participants will develop a foundational understanding of trauma and the core principles of Trauma-Informed Care. We will explore how trauma, at the historical, intergenerational, and individual levels, shapes the pathways through which system-involved youth become involved in gangs and gang activity. Participants will examine ways to conceptualize and apply trauma-informed principles and strategies when delivering supportive services to system-involved youth who are impacted by gang involvement. Alongside a trauma-informed lens on gang involvement, the training will also address other key dimensions of this topic, including typical gang characteristics, psychosocial and individual risk factors, motivations for joining gangs, and concrete strategies for building resilience in gang-involved youth and their families who are system involved

Several youth and families, especially those from the Latine community, that we serve in child welfare services have experienced shifts and transitions in their family systems due to immigration trends. Often, Latine families have recent roots from countries of origins that are impacted by poverty, violence, lack of access to education and steady employment among other challenges. Therefore, many families or family members are forced to leave their country of origin to find refuge and a better life abroad, including in the U.S. The migration for each family may look unique to their family system and specific needs, but often we have a parent or both parents immigrating to the U.S. while many children are left in the care of extended family in their country of origin. Eventually, families may reunite with their children, but what may be considered as a joyous occasion, is often experienced as challenging by families due the attachment disruption that may have occurred between parent(s) and their children during the separation. Along with the attachment and relationships being disrupted, the families face challenges, such as bicultural identities, acculturation, trauma, and several other factors that further compounds the stress for the family. This workshop will provide an overview in understanding the challenges that families face when an attachment disruption took place due to immigration as well as the impact of other accompanying challenges that surround families in such situations.
